How to actually see a city on a layover
3 July 2026
A long layover is either five hours in a departure lounge or a free visit to a city you’d never have booked — the only difference is a plan. The maths works more often than people think: with six hours between flights you can usually spend two of them actually standing in the city. Here’s how to do it without white-knuckling your way back through security.
Do the arithmetic honestly
Count backwards from boarding, not departure. You need to be back at the airport 90 minutes before an international flight, plus the transit time each way. A typical six-hour layover leaves roughly two hours of city; four hours of layover leaves almost none — spend that one at the airport with a book. If the numbers clear, commit; a hesitant half-trip wastes the time both places.
Pick one neighbourhood, not the city
The layover mistake is trying to “see” the city — you end up in queues for headline sights with no slack for delays. Instead pick the interesting district nearest your airport’s train line and walk it properly. Forty-five minutes on foot through one old quarter beats three photo stops from a taxi window, and it keeps you a single train ride from your gate.
Skip anything with a queue
Museums, towers, anything ticketed — the queue is the risk you can’t control. Streets don’t have queues. Churches, markets, squares, and waterfronts give you the city’s texture with zero booking and an exit that’s always right where you are. Your luggage logic is the same: use the airport or station lockers, carry one small bag, keep your passport on you.
Let the narration carry the plan
The layover walk has no room for standing on corners deciding what’s next — you want a route that starts where the train stops and loops back to it. That’s exactly what a generated audio walk is for: tell PodWalk the neighbourhood and how long you have — 15, 30, or 60 minutes — and it plots the loop, researches the stops, and plays each story as you reach it, hands-free. Download it while you’re still on airport Wi-Fi so roaming signal never enters the equation, and set an alarm for your walk-back time.
